Thursday, November 10 was the annual Split Rock Lighthouse Beacon Lighting to commemorate the sinking of the Great Lakes freighter Edmund Fitzgerald and the loss of its 29 crew members during a severe November storm back in 1975. The full moon was predicted to rise just behind the lighthouse making for a once in a lifetime photo opportunity. Forecasters said that the clouds would start to clear about the time of the lighting so we hoped that it would happen. Many people waited in anticipation for the clouds to part; several of them photographers. I counted 79 tripods. The clouds did not clear until after 10:00 PM so no one got that once in a lifetime photo.
