A couple that winters in Florida returned home to find a new tenant in the squirrel nest in one of their white pine trees. It was home to a family of Great Horned Owls. When Steve Van Kekerix and I arrived to take photos, we found one of the babies on the ground. The previous day he had either attempted to fly or fell out of the nest. We kept our distance using the telephoto lens to take the photos. When Steve set up his tripod the baby puffed up like a balloon.May Full Moon Over Little Spirit Cedar Tree 001
There were two great nights to watch the moon rise over Lake Superior. On Monday night Travis Novitsky, a friend, band member and excellent photographer from Grand Portage took me to photograph the full moon rising behind the Little Spirit Cedar Tree. This ancient white cedar is well over 400 years old. Some of the earliest records of the tree were written by French explorers in 1731. It was a mature tree at that time.May Full Moon Over Little Spirit Cedar Tree 002
The tree is held sacred by the Ojibwe, who traditionally leave offerings of tobacco to ensure a safe journey on Lake Superior. Due to past vandalism problems, a local Ojibwe band member must accompany anyone that visits the site. I thank Travis for the opportunity to see a spectacular moonrise from such a beautiful location.
