Winter does not want to let go of its grip on the Northland. Last week a blizzard warning was forecasted for the North Shore. The meteorologists missed the mark for snow but were right about the winds. Some of the gusts were clocked at 70 miles per hour at the Split Rock Lighthouse history center.Crystal Bay 002
I drove to Tettegouche State Park to get some photos of the waves as they crashed into the huge cliffs at Crystal Bay. The scene was breathtaking as tons of water collided with solid rock. I have never seen the spray catapulted that high. With the temperature in the low 20s, the spray froze and coated the trees with ice.Crystal Bay 003
Typically there is a series of three larger waves that intermittently hit the shore during a fierce storm. Commercial fishermen have nicknamed these waves, the “Three Sisters”. I photographed the waves for about 45 minutes when all of a sudden a series of three larger waves came rolling across the bay. This photo is the third wave in the “Three Sisters” series as it hit the cliff. I was fortunate to capture the huge collision.
