Each month I mark the calendar and look forward to the rising of the full moon. When the moonlight is reflected in water it is much more enchanting. Along Minnesota’s North Coast you can always capture photos of the full moon rising over Lake Superior no matter which month it is.Moonrise on Grand Marais Harbor 002
Last week was no different. The Grand Marais harbor is a great place to wait for the moon to come up. I set up along the beach in front of the campground and waited. There were some clouds along the horizon so I wasn’t sure that I would be able to see the moon. I used my GPS to line myself up so that the lighthouse would be between the moon and me.Moonrise Over Grand Marais Light
This was my first and favorite image captured that night. The tripod had to be set as low as possible to get the camera just above the sand beach in order to line everything up. At first only a sliver of the moon could be seen through the clouds. Then everything came together and the top of the moon broke out of the clouds just as it passed behind the light. All I could say was “Wow” and “Thank You”.
