I thought for sure that the snow would be melted when we got back to the North Shore but that was not the case. We still have a foot or more in the woods but it is disappearing quickly. For at least the next two weeks the rivers will continue to rise. This morning, I hiked into the Cascades on the Cascade River. After photographing the falls as I headed back to the car a pack of wolves started to howl and I knew I was back on the shore.Debris from Ice Dam on Cascade
When Karla came home from work she said there was a lot of ice and logs at the mouth of the Cascade River and I went to check it out. Sometime today a huge ice dam upstream must have let go. The ice and logs were over a half a mile wide and far out into the lake. I thought it would have been fun to be there when it let go until I noticed that the spot where I took the photos this morning was covered with huge chunks of ice. Had I been there at the time, I might not have been quick enough to escape the water, ice and logs when the dam let go.Skiing Lake Agnes
We experienced a wide variation of temperatures in the last ten days. It started with backcountry skiing into Rose Lake and Lake Agnes. When the warm spring sun melts the snow and then refreezes at night it makes for great skiing. The snow hardens enough to ski through the woods and over the lakes without trails. I really look forward to this time of year.
