Winter Solstice 001
Winter officially began on Wednesday at the Winter Solstice which was the shortest day of the year. We have had winter for several weeks already but this week was especially brutal. With twenty below zero windchills sea smoke rose from Lake Superior like an incoming winter storm.

The afternoon sunset was exceptionally beautiful with sea smoke rising above the waters of Agate Bay. I say “Afternoon Sunset” since on the winter Solstice the sun sets at 4:20 in the afternoon giving us less than seven hours of daylight.

The day before, I photographed the sunset in Grand Marais. A young couple hiked out to the lighthouse just at sunset.

It was plenty cold and the wind was blowing but if you are dressed warm you can still enjoy winter.
