A few weeks ago, I found a robin nest in one of our apple trees while working in the garden. This must have been a second or third nesting since it was so late in the summer.

One week later the first one hatched.

One day later the second one hatched.

The third one hatched on the third day.

I couldn’t believe how fast they grew. They had feathered out in four days.

The robins got used to us working in the garden so I was able to get some close-up photos of them feeding.

For the first week both parents would frequently be at the nest together.

The male has the brighter breast. The female is more speckled.

Later I would only see them at the nest one at a time.

I noticed the mom would bring way more worms to the nest than dad. Checking on line confirmed this. Bird sites on line also said that during the brief two weeks that the babies are in the nest they each can consume up to 14 feet of worms. Watching them off and on for two weeks I can confirm that.

Most of the time it was earth worms but other larvae and insects were also given to the babies.

In two weeks, they grew out of house and home and all three flew on the same day.

The rest of their time was spent practicing flying and perching in nearby trees.

The parents still fed them until they could find food for themselves. I sure had a lot of fun watching them for several weeks and see how fast they developed.
