Moose Pond

It was a beautiful summer day for heading up the Gunflint Trail to see if we could find a moose. Addie, our granddaughter hadn’t seen one yet so we were on the hunt. We stopped at this pretty little pond as sometimes moose will be feeding here. We didn’t see any moose but the pond made for a great photo.

A hike to Caribou Rock overlooking West Bearskin Lake was worth the time.

We came around a corner and Karla hollers “moose”. It is just off the trail but we didn’t see it until we were right alongside. By the time we get stopped we are beyond the moose. We didn’t want to back up as wildlife don’t like vehicles moving in reverse and will usually bolt. We get turned around and slowly approach the moose. Notice the butterfly right in front of its back leg. Both were feeding on the fireweed.

Addie is on the side of the car where the moose is and she is excited. Another car pulls up behind us and the moose is concentrating on the other car.

Soon it looks right at Addie and is only about 12 feet away. That is what you call a close encounter. Especially for your first moose sighting.

The moose goes back to eating fireweed. It didn’t leave until every fireweed plant in the patch was consumed.

When you see a moose’s face from the side it gives you the opportunity to see how long their snout really is. They can reach underwater plants with ease.
