After several warm days which melted the rest of this winter’s snow we got a surprise spring snowstorm dropping 15” of wet heavy snow in parts of the county. It looked beautiful but even the deer seemed a bit confused.
Every spring the male ruffed grouse will pick out a spot to beat his wings creating a drumming sound that attracts the females and lets the other males know that this is his territory. When on the log they drum about every three to five minutes.
Their wings beat so fast that they look like a blur. Nevertheless, the body does not move. I lined him up with some moss-covered roots in the background to give this photo a unique look.
