We took a trip up the Gunflint Trail to Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center. It is a great place to learn about the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and local residents from years ago. We hiked the Moccasin Flower Trail and found one of the most beautiful groupings of moccasin flowers that I have seen in some time. They should be in bloom all this week.
Lady-slippers are uniquely designed so that bees enter the front door in the pouch or moccasin to gain entry. Due to slippery walls and an overhanging lip they have to leave by the back door. In the process they pollinate the flower.
