The forecast was for calm winds on Tuesday so I decided to head up to West Bearskin Lake to do some kayaking. The sunrise from Cutface overlook along Hwy61 was awesome.
As I rounded one corner watching the cedars five turkey vultures lifted off in front of me. Since it was in the 80’s they must have been cooling off under the cedars. I photographed this one as it landed on a dead birch snag. Their red featherless heads are quite ugly.
I stopped at one of the islands that usually has a loon nest. I found the nest but predators had broken the eggs. No loons were located anywhere on the lake. I was disappointed as this is the third year in a row that the eggs have been damaged.
On the way home, I photographed the lupines. This has been a great year for lupines. The cool moist spring must have given them lots of moisture which brought out the best of colors.
