Canoeing

This week we did some canoeing and kayaking up the Gunflint Trail with friends. The fresh green leaves along the lake shore were exceptionally beautiful.

We happened to find a loon sitting on its nest in one of the back bays which made the day even more amazing.

Notice the black flies on the head of the loon. Last year almost half the loons abandoned their nests due to the large number of black flies attacking them. I hope this year will be different.

Whitetail Fawn 001

I found a newborn fawn on our property. The little guy was pretty shaky when he tried to stand up so he was most likely only a few hours old.

I was happy to see it get up and off of the road. You can see how wobbly its legs are.

It laid down again so I snapped a quick photo before leaving them alone. I found it a few days later and it could run pretty quickly already.

I saw a second fawn in Grand Marais. I was picking up some parts at Steve’s Sports in town. This newborn fawn was resting under one of the new 4-wheelers waiting for mom to come back. One of the staff said that they had watched it being born just two days ago and the doe moves it to different locations a couple times a day.
