We went back to check on the loon nest that I photographed last week. It was enjoyable canoeing through the fog at sunrise.

The surface was like glass making the reflection of this large rock pretty photogenic.When we got to the nest we were very disappointed. Either a mink or otter had eaten the eggs. The nest was empty and the pair of loons were at the other end of the lake. I don’t know if loons nest again after losing their eggs this early.

Bald Eagle 001

We saw a bald eagle sitting in a dead snag. Eagles are one of the main predators of baby loons but I don’t think they take the eggs.

Soon it flew along the shoreline looking for breakfast. It looked like it lost one of it's primary wing feathers in an accident but it didn't seem to hinder it's flying ability.

While heading home I saw a cute little chipmunk alongside the trail.

Blue Flag

Wild flowers are starting to bloom in abundance. Some of the first are the blue flags also called wild iris. This is one of my favorite early season flowers.
