Grand Marais Sunrise 001

We had a beautiful sunrise to begin the week. These two sleeping Canada geese decided not to fly south and have spent the winter in the Grand Marais Harbor.

While the sky was still red, one goose took its head out from under its wing.

The next morning I photographed the sun as it rose above Hollow Rock on the Grand Portage Reservation.

It was fun to look through the opening and see the sunlight reflecting off the water.

As the sunlight lit up the other side of Hollow Rock, an almost perfect shape of a young woman could be seen in the ice. Notice the face, eyes, long braided hair, arms and flowing dress. Lake Superior waves can produce some very unique ice sculptures.

At East Bay in Grand Marais the same storm created beautiful icicles on the trees.

This spruce was completely covered in ice. The ice to the left of the tree is shaped like an otter or sea lion resting on the shore.

Another ice sculpture formed as spray from Lake Superior waves came over the break wall. It appears as though the wave is frozen in place.
