On Tuesday strong SW winds whipped Lake Superior into one of the strongest storms we have seen for some time.

66 mph wind gusts were recorded in the harbor.

By mid-afternoon 14–15 foot waves were crashing into the shoreline sending spray over the lighthouse.

Visitors flocked to the shoreline to watch the waves.

Lake Superior was in such a frenzy that spray from the waves was coming over HWY 61 in downtown Grand Marais.

The top of the lighthouse is 48 feet above the waterline and spray was being hurled twice that high.

It is good that the lighthouse was built to withstand a lot of force as wave after wave engulfed the light.

At times you couldn’t even see the lighthouse in the spray.

Notice the herring gull in front of the wave. Many gulls seemed like they were testing how close they could get and still survive.

As the sun set the waves continued on into the evening.

The next evening the lake was calm and took on a new look.
