West Bearskin Lake

It was going to be a beautiful day for kayaking so Karla and I drove up to West Bearskin Lake to see if the loon babies had hatched and avoided predators. This is the view of West Bearskin from Caribou Rock.

Half way down the lake we discovered one adult and a baby feeding. Soon the second parent appeared. This was the second nesting for this pair so this baby is really small for the end of July.

We followed them while they fished along the shoreline for about an hour.

Since there was only one baby a predator must have taken the other one.
We talked to a camper on another lake that saw an eagle take one baby right off the back of the adult loon. Both parents fought hard but lost the battle.

They kept busy fishing along the weed line.

Their chest is so white that it is hard not to overexpose it when taking photos in the direct sunlight.

The pair decided to cross the lake and fish the other shore so we wished them well. This baby is so small for this time of year; I will be amazed if it is ready to fly south before freeze up. I hope so.
