I decided to take photos at the boat landing on Caribou Lake. I thought there would have been others at the landing but I was the only one that came for the show. The colors of the aurora reflected off the glassy surface of Caribou Lake. Without any wind the night was eerily quiet. I just stood there enjoying the silence as the aurora danced overhead.
After taking photos for about an hour a single loon started calling from out on the lake. The call of the loon is one of my favorite wilderness sounds and the scene before me made me feel like I was in the middle of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.Caribou Lake Aurora 003
As a light fog started to cover the lake I decided to pose for a photo with my headlamp pointed to the sky. That is when a meteorite passed overhead burning up in less than a second. It was one of the largest meteorites I have seen in some time. I was fortunate to have had the shutter open at the right time to capture its disintegration.
