The Lake Superior Storm Festival was held last week and it celebrated the power and beauty of Lake Superior’s North Shore. Lake Superior did its part and put on quite a show.

Thursday evening the Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Beacon Lighting was held at the Split Rock Lighthouse Historic Site. Several hundred people where present for the bell ringing and lighting of the light.

It is always fun to view the light casting its beam across Lake Superior.

Saturday during the Storm Festival Lake Superior was more on the wild side. Huge waves came crashing into the shoreline in Grand Marias.

It is amazing to see the power of the water when the lake is all churned up.

All afternoon people were hiking out on Artist Point to see the huge waves.

Another good location to watch waves is in front of the Grand Marais campground.

The point to the west of the campground was being hammered by huge waves all day.
Super Moon 001
The weekend ended with what is called the “Super Moon”. When the moon is at perigee it is the closest to earth making it 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter.

I photographed the “Super Moon” in front of Split Rock Lighthouse.

The moon kept getting brighter as it rose over Lake Superior.

There were several dozen photographers taking photos. Others came to sit and enjoy the evening.
