Blueberry Picking 001

This week’s weather has been very summer-like and a beautiful week to spend outdoors. We drove up the Gunflint Trail with some friends to pick blueberries.

The blueberries are plentiful.

Together the four of us picked about 10 quarts of blueberries in just over an hour.

Moose

Wildlife was out and about. We saw two moose, a bear, a beaver and numerous birds.

We spent another day photographing several places along the North Shore. This photo was taken from the Highway 61 bridge over the Beaver River in Beaver Bay.

View From Shovel Point

A hike up to Shovel Point in Tettegouche State Park provided awesome views of a very blue Lake Superior.

The beach rock below Shovel Point has been worn smooth by many years of wave action.

Sugarloaf Cove 001

We stopped at Sugarloaf Cove Scientific and Natural Area to walk the beach. Someone there had a real talent for balancing smooth rocks.

This one was my favorite. The waves were building to the point of almost knocking it over.

We couldn’t quite figure out how they could get the rocks to stand until we tried it ourselves.

I took a handful of smaller rocks and sand and placed it on the base rock. I then stood another rock up on its end and pushed it into the sand. It stood. Then with your mouth you blow away the remaining sand. The very small stones are not very noticeable that hold the big rock in place.
