At sunrise I drove to Hollow Rock just south of Grand Portage.

As the sunlight hit the icicles in the rock they had a beautiful early morning glow that reflected in the calm waters of Lake Superior.

Frost covered everything on the point.

The water vapor crystallized into ice that covered every branch and twig. This winter phenomenon, also called hoarfrost, doesn’t occur very often.

But when it does it is beautiful.

On the north side of the point hoarfrost covered not only the trees but also the edges of the pancake ice below.

Moonrise Over Grand Marais Harbor 001
That night the moon rose over the Grand Marais Harbor where the swells moved the pancake ice back and forth.

The moon had a small ring around it for a short time.

The entire time I watched the moonrise, the resident beaver swam between the ice chunks. Their fur must provide great insulation, as the water is very cold.
