Recent snow has brightened the landscape and brought winter to parts of the North Shore. Even driving up our driveway feels like inserting yourself into a winter post card.
About three miles up the Cascade River is Hidden Falls. It is accessed from County Road 45 and gives a beautiful view into the Cascade River Valley. The pine and cedar are completely covered in snow. Notice the three pileated holes in the dead white pine to the right.
Here is a closer view. Pileated woodpeckers make a new nesting cavity each year; sometimes up to three in the same tree. The new snow really outlines the entrances to these abandoned nests.
