Driftwood Beach 001

We spent last week camping with family on Jekyll Island in southern Georgia. Jekyll Island has many miles of beautiful sand beaches. One of the most photogenic is Driftwood Beach. Covered with weathered oaks that have succumbed to beach erosion over the years, this beach provides many photo opportunities.

Some have tipped over with the branches creating different shapes and designs. This one looks like the head of an alligator. Look to the right center of the photo. Once you see the head, your eye cannot help but to go there when looking at the photo.

Several of the oaks are huge and probably well over 200 years when they died. This species is the Live Oak. Known for their incredible density, Live Oak trees provided durable wood for construction of early American navy vessels. Cannon balls would bounce off of the ship walls that were made of thick Live Oak.

Others are still standing and look like Totem Poles. You can see the exposed roots caused from storms washing away the sand under them.

Our granddaughter loved running up and down the beach.

When you look close at the weathered wood, you can see shapes of trees in the trees.

I went to the beach each morning for sunrise. This one was at high tide when half of the trees were in water.

As the waves receded, you could photograph the reflections in the wet sand.

One morning there was enough cloud cover to photograph the melting sun as the water vapor reflected the sunlight over the surface of the ocean.

Jekyll Island 001

Jekyll Island campground has plentiful live oaks along with pine and other species making it a great place to camp. This is a view straight up from our campsite showing the green leaves of spring.

Lots of the trees are covered with Spanish moss.

This is the largest oak on the island. It is over 350 years old with a diameter of over seven feet and a crown over 100 feet.

This egret was fishing along Driftwood Beach.

There were plenty of squirrels in the campground.

Next to our site was a tree with a broad-headed skink living in it. It would come out in the heat of the day. It was about 10 inches long. Our granddaughter wasn’t a fan.
