Hollow Rock Grand Portage

We drove to Grand Portage to photograph the sunrise on Hollow Rock. It was a beautiful morning. The sunrise was not exceptional but the moon setting over Hollow Rock was well worth the trip. The pink and blue colors in the sky made a great backdrop to Hollow Rock.

Northern Hawk Owl 001

We saw a northern hawk owl near Judge C. R. Magney State Park perched on the top of a dead tree. It was looking for mice. When we approached the owl it didn’t seem to care that we were taking its photo as it just kept looking for mice.

It flew to a dead balsam snag and we were able to walk up to the tree and get some great photos against the clear blue sky.

I set the tripod under the tree to try to get the owl to lean over and look at me. I tried making all kinds of squeaking sounds but nothing got its attention until I finally tried opening and closing the zipper on my jacket. It instantly looked down from its moss-covered perch giving me an inquisitive look. It turned out to be my favorite photo of the day.
