It has been a lot of fun to photograph the ice shards this week.

Waves have been slowly eroding the ice ridges but there is still plenty of ice on Lake Superior’s shoreline to make it interesting.

I photographed these shards in front of the French River where there were several fishermen standing on the edge of the shards casting for trout and salmon. While I was watching these two hauled in a nice salmon. They had three fish in all; a very successful day of fishing.

In the last two days strong off lake winds have piled snow behind these ice shards.

In other places the wind and blowing snow has polished the ice giving it a glass like appearance.

Along Brighton Beach this ice shard shown all the colors of the rainbow as the sun set over Duluth.

The next morning with the rising sun lighting it up it had a totally different look.

In the early morning sun the piles in front of Grand Marais were pretty awesome.

Yesterday’s sunset was great over the Sawtooth Mountains.

Believe it or not after the strong winds last night all of the ice in this photo is gone. It took less than twelve hours for the waves to break it up and this morning it is all open water.
