Grand Marais Sunrise 001

Lake Superior puts on a pretty good show when it combines calm water, fog, clouds and the sunrise. I think Thursday morning’s sunrise was the best I’ve seen this year.

The morning began with just a light pink on the horizon. Fog hid most of Grand Marais.

Minutes before the sun made its appearance the clouds turned bright yellow and orange. You can still see the fog over Lake Superior in the background.

The fog slowly moved back into the harbor.

This was the best scene of the morning.

As the fog became denser the scene appeared more pastel in appearance.

Soon the intensity of the light began to fade and I started to walk back to the car to put my camera away.

I quickly changed my mind, as the sun got closer to the horizon.

The rays were like beacons of light into the sky as the colors got brighter and brighter.

Right before the sun came up on the horizon the colors were the brightest.

When the sun rose it was right behind the Grand Marais lighthouse.
