Ruby-throated Hummingbird Nest 001

I was fortunate to be able to photograph a hummingbird nest, as they are one of the hardest nests to find. They are so small and well camouflaged.

The nest, built by the female, is a small little cup of grasses, spider webs and plant fibers lined with plant down. She fastens lichens to the nest and branch blending the nest into its surroundings to disguise it. Even when the nest location is known it is very difficult to find again. A friend of mine found this one.

During the past two weeks, we watched the female feed the babies several times. Here the babies have hatched and the only thing that can be seen is one little beak.

They grow quickly.

Since the nest is very flexible it actually expands to accommodate the growing babies.

The baby looks larger than the adult.

The female fed the babies about every half hour.

The babies were standing on top of the nest and moving around.

At this point they have a hard time both fitting into the cup of the nest.

Here they are stretching their wings ready to take flight. It is amazing that their wings can beat over 50 times per second.

This fall they will migrate south and possibly cross the Gulf of Mexico. They are truly one of God’s amazing creatures.
