Grand Marais Sunset 001

On Thursday strong winds coming out of the south blew all afternoon. The on shore winds created huge waves that crashed over the Grand Marais break wall. I drove into Grand Marias to photograph the waves and was greeted with one of the more beautiful sunsets of the month. As the sun set behind the lighthouse the sky turned a bright red.

After the sunset the higher clouds reflected reds and oranges as the lower clouds shown a darker blue-gray.

It was very hard to keep the camera steady as the strong wind was blowing everything around, including me! I tried using the tripod but even then the wind would move the camera. I tried steadying the camera on the car but the car was rocking back and forth in the wind. I managed to get a few images by putting the tripod behind the car to break some of the wind.

The next day after the storm there were plenty of ice formations to photograph. This first photo was after the sun had set.

This photo was at sunrise from the same location. Notice the sea smoke covering Lake Superior in the background.
