St. George Island State Park 001

We spent the last few days in Florida enjoying the white sand beaches of St. George Island State Park. The first night, we were greeted with a nice sunset.

St. George Island is a barrier island made up of beautiful white sugar sand beaches and white sand dunes.

The sand is so fine that, from a distance, it looks just like snow. This seems like this is a boardwalk to nowhere, but it was connected to the road at one time. It had eroded over the years, making it unsafe so they removed most of it. This section was completely buried at the time. Now more wind erosion has exposed the remaining section.

The sand that has been blown away from the boardwalk area is slowly working its way to the campground.

The winds create the most interesting patterns in the fine sugar sand.

Green Tree Frog 001

Shortly after setting up camp, we found this little green tree frog.

St George Island Lighthouse

It was a beautiful afternoon when we toured the St. George Island Lighthouse.

The park has lots of birds. The most abundant species was the great blue heron.

They were feeding in several of the ponds around the campground.

When it was windy they seemed to look like an old man’s beard.

During the day, they rested in some of the pine trees on the island.

Port St Joseph Lighthouse

We visited the port of St. Joseph, which is a small fishing/tourist town along the Florida coast.

One thing about walking the beaches in January is that there are very few people on the beach to disturb the patterns made by the wind.

On the way into the park, we came across two wild boars. The park attendant said they seem to be multiplying in Florida and always moving into new areas.

It was cold enough that we weren’t about to swim, but this sign was something we don’t see very often.
