We spent the last week camping on Jekyll Island off the coast of Georgia. The weather was perfect and we had a great time with family. The island is covered with Live Oaks, the State Tree of Georgia. This is one of the roads by the campground. Before we arrived, I had looked at a map of the campground using Google Earth and I wondered why I couldn’t see any of the campsites. The whole campground has a closed canopy of oak branches. It is a great place for biking as the island is covered with paved trails over flat terrain.

We went on a search for the largest oaks. This one with a 23-foot girth at over 350 years old was the largest tree our granddaughter has ever climbed.

One of the oaks we found nearby was in the middle of the street in Brunswick. This oak was around during the signing of the United States Constitution.

My favorite part of the island was “Driftwood Beach”.

This out of the way beach is covered with old dead weathered “Live Oaks” that have been effected by beach erosion. Some have tipped over while others are still standing in the beach sand.

About two miles of beach are covered with this beautiful driftwood.

The nice part of this beach is that no one has vandalized the trees. Not one branch has been cut off or carved on. I think the $6 daily fee to be on the island has kept this area more pristine.

In some places you could see the above ground part of the tree and the roots that had been exposed due to erosion.

The more populated end of the island has sand dunes. This is the area where most people come to swim and our granddaughter loved swimming and playing on this beach.

The only critters we found on the island other than lots of birds was this character. Our neighbors weren’t used to camping and they left their food on the picnic table over night. It didn’t last long.

Sweetwater Creek State Park

Than when we got back to our daughter’s home we had a beautiful sunrise with a light fog covering the water.
