Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga, TN

While returning from visiting family in Georgia we decided to take our time and see some sites along the way. We stopped in Chattanooga, Tennessee to see Ruby Falls, which is located over 1,000 feet underground in a cave. The falls are very nice but it is privately owned and pretty commercialized. It is located under Lookout Point overlooking the town of Chattanooga. There is a National Military Park on Lookout Mountain, as this was the spot of several battles that took place during the Civil War.

Lincoln Birthplace Memorial 001

We decided to travel some of the country roads in Kentucky. We stopped at Abraham Lincoln’s Birthplace National Historical Park where there is a marble and granite memorial that houses the log cabin that was originally accepted as Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace.

The cabin is preserved inside the memorial.

To the left side of the memorial is the sinking spring where the Lincoln family got their drinking water.

Lincoln Boyhood Home

Just down the road a rebuilt cabin is located at Knob Creek Farm where Lincoln lived several years as a young boy.

Medora Covered Bridge 001

We ran into road construction in Indiana. We decided on an alternative route and fortunately discovered the Medora Historical Covered Bridge that is the longest historic covered bridge in the United States.

Total bridge length is 460 feet.

The wooden arches were pretty impressive.

Round Barn

Just past the bridge was one of two round barns in the area. We were glad for the detour or we would have missed these historic structures.

Moonrise over Grand Marais Harbor

At the end of the trip the full moon over the Grand Marais harbor welcomed us home.
