Some of the best wave watching was at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. The wind had already stopped but not the waves. Below the lighthouse huge rollers were hitting the beach. When they collided with the rock cliffs it not only made for some incredible photos but great sounds as well. The waves picked up the smooth rocks along the beach and then drop them again with sounds that can’t be described. Another photographer told me he was trying to figure out what was making that incredible sound until he realized it was the beach rock being lifted and dropped.

We were able to get closer to the waves because the wind had changed direction and was blowing the spray away from the shore. If the wind had not changed I would have been drenched from the spray, not to mention my camera would have gotten wet.
About every thirty or forty waves there was a series of larger ones. Early commercial fisherman called them “The Three Sisters”. They are always the ones to watch for since they can do the most damage. The last wave in the series of three is always the largest. This wave is the last one in this particular series of “The Three Sisters” and the largest wave that I saw at Split Rock.
