Split Rock Lighthouse 001
This week we photographed the Split Rock Lighthouse twice. The first time we had a clear blue sky as we waited for the moon to appear.

The light from the setting sun and artificial light inside the lighthouse created a prism of colors.

As we waited for the moon to show we photographed the lighthouse from the shoreline.

Clouds developed over the lake hiding the moon but there was still enough light filtering through the clouds to give a beautiful glow to the waters of Lake Superior.

As it got darker the water turned lighter from the moonlight.

Tonight was the annual Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Beacon Lighting. Each year on November 10 the lighthouse beacon is lit to commemorate the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald and all the other vessels lost on the Great Lakes.
The names of the 29 lost crewmembers are read to the tolling of a ship’s bell. After that the light was turned on.

This year the event took place in the midst of a snowstorm. The blowing snow gave the beacon lighting a special magical appearance.
