Wood Duck 001

It finally feels like summer with the warmer temps and green leaves. I spent a few mornings in my blind on the edge of our pond trying to photograph wood ducks. Along with being the most colorful duck they are also the most jumpy. I had to be into the blind well before sunrise and silent so when they flew in I didn’t scare them. Any noise or movement will scare them away.

On the third morning everything worked.

A deer happened to chase most of the ducks away but this one lone male swam right in front of the blind.

The water was like glass making for perfect reflections.

It couldn’t have been a more perfect morning.

We returned to our resident fox den to see how the kits are doing.

Fox kits are about the cutest of all animals.

This one jumped completely in the air while being chased by another kit.

There are four left of the original eight in the den. I don’t know if cars hit the missing four or if they just died. It is pretty hard for the parents to find enough food to feed a family of eight.

The kits are pretty big now and really playful. A little slap across the face will always get a chase going. We had a great time watching them chase each other around.

Mom returned with a mouse and really got the attention of these two kits.

The kits roam about 100 yards from the den so it won’t be long and they will be exploring well beyond the den.
