Ice Caves 001

It has been five years since Lake Superior has had enough ice to allow access to the Wisconsin sea caves. The caves are located in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore just east of Cornucopia. When the ice is sufficient to allow access to the caves, the Park Service publicizes it through television, newspapers and a call-in ice line.

We thought there would be a few people at the caves last Friday but were not expecting hundreds. Our first view of the shoreline reminded me of the Golden Staircase in the movie Klondike.

It is well worth the mile hike to reach the caves. The red sandstone cliffs with their numerous caves are interesting in the summer but in the winter covered in ice they are absolutely awe inspiring.

Icicles were everywhere.

Around each point was another cave with amazing ice formations to explore.

We saw kids having fun by crawling in and out of the caves.

All the ice seemed to bring out the kid in everyone. Our son and his wife did a little dance as they passed by one of the arches. Everyone was having a good time.

Some of the ice had a beautiful blue color.

This little girl was extremely impressed with the millions of icicles.

The red sandstone was like Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

As we rounded one of the corners we saw what appeared to be a wolf crossing the ice pack. You can see it in the distance in this photo.

When we got closer we discovered it was a coyote.
