Read MoreChristmas Flying Squirrels
It was the week after Christmas and all around their house not a creature was stirring, not even a grouse.
The flying squirrels all-snug in their beds, had visions of berries dancing in their heads.
They had just settled down when what should appear but two crazy photographers and all of their gear.
They scratched on the tree and it made such a clatter that the squirrels sprang from their beds to see what was the matter.
Out of the way said the one little squirrel. I want to see who’s disturbing our burrow.
With a wink of their eye and a twist of their head they all soon knew that they had nothing to dread.
They posed for some photos then disappeared from sight. All they wanted was to sleep until night.
The photographers exclaimed as they drove out of site. “Now that was an outdoor adventure alright”.
We are sending this story and photo to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas! It was just after Christmas a few years ago when a friend and I found these five adult flying squirrels spending the winter in an old pileated woodpecker hole. We were looking for wildlife when we came upon an old growth aspen tree that had three abandoned woodpecker holes in it. We scratched on the tree and twelve flying squirrels came out of all three holes. The second time we scratched they just stuck their heads out and I got this photo. This is still one of my favorite photos and outdoor adventures.
