Although winter seems to still have a grip on the Northland the Sharp-tailed grouse are in the mood for dancing. Last Friday David Brislance and I headed over to the nearest lek before sunrise.

A lek is an area where sharp-tailed grouse gather in the spring. It is usually in a farm field that has a higher spot of ground so that the grouse can keep an eye out for predators.

It is amazing to watch the males dance. They begin by puffing up their necks and cooing. Soon they are going in circles stomping the ground with their feet and dancing with wings spread out like an airplane getting ready for lift off.

There is precision in the dance moves. The entire group starts at the same time and stops at the same time.

In between dancing they face each other in a stare-down contest.

Soon they are jumping and fighting. The fighting can get pretty rough and at times torn out feathers are flying in the air.

The dancing begins about a half hour before sunrise and continues for about two to three hours. The best photos are at sunrise when the sun creates a warm glow on the birds. The dancing is to attract a mate.

We have enjoyed this spring event for several years now and never seem to tire of watching the birds in action. Especially that sharp little tail going back and forth and the sounds that their feet make when hitting the ground.

This year one male in particular stood out by having the fiercest expression on his face. I am curious to know if the expression is going to help or hinder his efforts.
