We had an awesome evening as we watched the full moon rise above the Grand Marais harbor. Floating ice reflected not only the full moon but also the light from the lighthouse adding to the magic of the evening.

We thought the clouds along the horizon were going to block the moon’s appearance; however, they actually enhanced the photo opportunity by creating a band that the moon had to pass through.

Early the next morning I went back into Grand Marais to photograph the setting of the moon. These photos were taken across the harbor from where the evening photos were shot. Again the reflected light on the ice sheets added to the experience.

Moon reflections Grand Marais

In this image the light reflecting off the closest ice sheet has the shape of a herring gull. The wing goes off to the left as the bird is flying to the right. The wing, body, head and beak are plainly visible in the moonlight on the ice.

I have shown this photo to four people. One can’t see anything; one thinks he can but is not sure; one thinks it looks like a crow; and the last one can plainly see it. So take a look see if you see the gull.
