Aurora Borealis 001

When I went to bed last night I was thinking, I don’t have anything for “Photo of the Week”. Five hours later and all that changed. I woke up at 4:30 to get a glass of water. Out the kitchen window was the most incredible Aurora Borealis that I have seen for some time. Green lights danced and shimmered across the night sky.

I grabbed my camera, stepped out into the crisp ten below temperatures and set up my tripod. I set the camera to a 30 second exposure and stepped back to take it all in. The verse came to mind, “The skies proclaim the work of His hands”.

As I was getting ready to take another image I hear the familiar sound of our resident wolf pack. Their distance calls echo from the valley below that leads to Cascade River State Park.

Yesterday the temperature had dropped from thirty above zero to ten below zero. As a result the trees were popping and snapping in the calm morning air. It was like I was surrounded by small caliber gunfire.

I moved to the other side of the house to get a photo with our house in the corner. The first rays of the morning light cast a blue tint to the sky almost overpowering the green of the Northern Lights. Five more minutes and it was all over. I am very thankful to be living on the North Shore where every day brings new wonders to photograph.
