A friend told me about a cow moose and twin calves that have been frequently seen on the Gunflint Trail next to Swamper Lake. Karla and I were fortunate enough to find them today.

We attended the annual instructors’ gathering and brunch at North House Folk School in Grand Marais. After the brunch we decided to take the 20 minute drive up the trail to where the moose had been spotted. Not long after we arrived the cow and twins stepped out of the woods. They didn’t appear concerned that we were watching them. She was drinking water from the ditch next to the black topped road where the road salt had accumulated and licking her lips. Her cravings for the salt outweighed her fear of people.

We photographed the moose for about 15 minutes and still had time to make it back to the North House for a serving of the apple pie.

With the shortage of moose you may want to take advantage of this awesome opportunity. There are temporary “Baby Moose” road signs posted in the area that the moose frequent so you can’t miss the spot.

Pink Lady's-Slippers 001

The pink lady’s-slippers are blooming this week. Karla and I took a hike along the river in Cascade River State Park and saw about 30 of these beautiful flowers.
