Caribou Rock Overlook

After kayaking we hiked to an overlook on the edge of the BWCAW. The view from the top of Caribou Rock overlooking West Bearskin Lake is spectacular and the girls agreed. The two oldest ones told us that it was the best day of their vacation. Of course starting the day with a “World’s Best” donut and ending with a pretty awesome peanut butter malt might have also played a part in it.

Flooding Grand Marais

Last week we received a lot of rain. One day over 6 inches fell putting some areas at flood stage including downtown Grand Marais. Shoppers heading to the new Coop store had to walk in water up to their knees.

High Falls Grand Portage State Park 001

Today we hiked to the High Falls in Grand Portage State Park. The water flowing over the falls was incredible. Spray was bouncing back to almost the top of the 125 foot drop of the falls and the overlook decks, stairs and railings were covered with water.

It was difficult to get photos due to the amount of spray in the air. I had to have the camera in a plastic sleeve while taking these photos to avoid damaging the camera.

This week we had a lot of fun showing our visiting relatives some of the North Shore sites. The last day we went kayaking along the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).

Their four girls loved being on the water kayaking and canoeing and commented they couldn’t believe how beautiful the lakes are in Northeastern Minnesota.

We traveled close to the shore so we could see all the various rock formations and cedar roots.
