We heard from some friends about a family of wolves that have been seen regularly crossing one of the backcountry roads north of Two Harbors. This week I had an opportunity to go check it out. I got there early in the morning and parked in the approximate location of the sightings. After a short wait I glanced into my rear view mirror and see three wolf pups crossing the road behind me.Gray Wolf Pup 002
Being in the right place at the right time to see wolves doesn’t happen very often so I was pretty excited. There were supposed to be seven wolf pups and the adult but only five were showing themselves today. They crossed the road several times while catching grasshoppers. They were a lot of fun to watch.Gray Wolf Pup 003
I followed them down the road for about a mile as they came in and out of the woods. At one point I drove ahead of them and sat by the side of the road trying to guess where they might come out. I saw grass moving in the ditch and I held up the camera and got ready. The mosquitoes were so bad that as I am holding the camera about two dozen or more mosquitoes were biting me. I held off swatting them until I got the photos of the wolf pup as he stuck his head out from behind the grass. It was worth the pain.
