We imitated the sound of a cow moose and could visualize a bull coming out of the fog in front of us. The morning was so quiet that sound carried for miles. As the sun came up the birds became active. From chickadees to woodpeckers they began their morning feeding and came by to check us out.Lichen Covered Birch
As the sun’s rays warmed the vegetation around us water started to evaporate creating even more ground fog. The lichen covered trees started to look like we were in an enchanted forest. We never got a moose to answer but all three of us agreed that it was a pretty exceptional morning to be in the woods.Moose Country
Yesterday morning’s forecast was clear and calm so I called a friend to see if he and his son wanted to accompany me into the Superior National Forest and try some moose calling. We hiked into a spruce and pine plantation that overlooks a large cedar swamp and beaver pond. The temperatures along with rain the previous night produced a beautiful fog that covered the low areas of the forest. The morning was picture perfect as we found our spot overlooking the beaver pond.Weasel
While waiting for a bull to answer we talked about wildlife happenings on previous moose calling trips. One time a pack of wolves howled just after I called. The howling went on for several minutes. We saw droppings on the road when we got back to the car but never saw the wolves. On another occasion a weasel stuck its head out of the cedar tree next to us wondering about all the noise.
