With the unsettled rainy weather this week we had both a great sunrise and sunset over Lake Superior. The sunrise which included a beautiful sun pillar occurred on Monday, October 8. I went to Artist Point in Grand Marais to photograph the sunrise reflected in the small pools of water in front of the break wall. I get to see a sun pillar about twice a year and this one was pretty spectacular. A sun pillar forms when cold, calm air creates ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. The sunrise then reflects off the ice crystals.Grand Marais Sunset 001
This sunset was on Friday, October 12. We were getting ready for supper when we noticed that the clouds were forming for a good sunset. Again I headed into Grand Marais. It turned out to be one of the best sunsets I have seen all year. I set up the camera and composed the photo to include the fishing dock and harbor. As I was getting ready to take the photo it just seemed as though something was missing. I needed someone in the picture experiencing the sunset. Just then along came a family with a young girl. The mom exclaimed how beautiful the sunset was and her daughter started to run out on the dock. Her mom told her not to get in my way but I turned around and said “Yes, please let her get into my photo”. Ava ran to the end of the dock and stood there amazed at the sight before her.
