Bald Eagle Nest

We ended our outdoor adventure viewing a bald eagle as it sat on eggs high in a birch tree along the shores of Lake Superior. Their mom said that on the way home the boys couldn’t stop talking about their day.

Osprey Nest

After we left the sharp-tailed grouse blind we watched a pair of osprey working on their new nest. The electric company wanted them to move so they put an orange cone on the top of the pole. The osprey just built their nest around it. I am sure when some people see this nest they will think that the osprey hauled that cone up there.

I really enjoy taking kids into the outdoors and giving them experiences that they wouldn’t get otherwise. The sharp-tails came so close to the bind that at times it seemed that they were looking into the blind itself.

The boys kept asking questions about how they make that noise, why they dance and are they hurting each other when they fight.

As you can see from the blood on this bird’s neck they do mean business when they fight each other. It was a very fun and entertaining morning.

Sharp-tailed Grouse Blind

I had the privilege of taking three young boys and their mom out to the sharp-tailed grouse lek this week. They had never experienced this before and the look in their eyes when a dozen sharp-tails started dancing in front of the blind was priceless.

Sunrise Grand Marais Harbor

The week started out with a beautiful sunrise over the Grand Marais Harbor. The forecast was for stormy weather in the morning which also can bring the right amount of cloud cover for great sunrises. A beautiful sun pillar was also reflected in the calm waters of the harbor. A sun pillar will form when ice crystals are in the air. The ice crystals reflect the light back to earth.
