On October 27 the North Shore experienced a very powerful storm. The storm covered most of the Midwest and was one of the largest storms to hit the area in many years. When the center of the storm crossed south of Lake Superior, hurricane like winds from the southwest produced huge waves that pounded the area around Grand Marais. Many homes lost power due to downed trees.Lake Superior Storm 003
Many people gathered along the shore to witness the power of the storm. Wind gusts from 40 to 60 mph created waves that exceeded 20 feet in height. As the huge rollers collided with the Grand Marais break wall the water and spray were catapulted several feet above the lighthouse.Lake Superior Storm 005
I wanted to get a few photos from outside the break wall but the usual path to Artist Point was covered with water. I followed the beach on the east side of the harbor, crossed a small stream created from wash from the waves, climbed the rocks on the back of the point and worked my way through the trees. Several of the trees were blown down. I found a spot where a rock point was splitting the waves on both sides protecting me from the majority of the spray. That is where I was able to capture my favorite image of the day. It wasn’t dangerous to go where I did - just loud, scary and wet.
One thing that kept my camera and me dry was a jacket that I am reviewing for my niece who helped with the design. It is called the JakPak. It is a raincoat, tent, sleeping bag combination. I just flipped the little tent over me and it kept the camera from getting wet. Check it out on http://www.JakPak.com.
