As winter’s cold sets in wildlife deal with it in various ways. Some head south, some curl up in a ball and go to sleep while others build warm houses and store up food for the long winter. Beavers are marvels at building houses and storing food. We have a family of six in the Gooseberry River that have been working for months storing enough twigs and branches to get them through the long winter. This week they were still adding food to the pile and packing more mud to help secure and insulate their house.Carrying Mud and Leaves
The first time I saw a beaver carrying mud and leaves and placing them on their house I just had to laugh. I always thought that they just pushed the mud up the walls of the house. To see them pick up the mud and waddle up to the top of the house like a penguin is just a hoot. I never tire of watching them work on their houses.
