Frosty Morning 001

Monday the temperature along the shore of Lake Superior plummeted. When I looked at the thermometer at 5:30 AM it was -20. I went to Duluth Shipping News on the internet and it said that the Presque Isle Ore Boat was docked at Two Harbors loading iron ore. I figured that the boat would be covered with ice and worth driving to town for a photo opportunity. When I got to Lighthouse Point I couldn’t even see the Presque Isle

When the 32 degree water of Agate Bay met -20 degree air an unbelievable amount of steam was rising from the surface. The steam produced hoarfrost which is interlocking ice crystals that covered the trees and scrubs.

It was a beautiful winter wonderland. Every branch on every tree and even the rocks was covered with hoarfrost. There were so many beautiful scenes to take in and photograph that I forgot about the Presque Isle.

The cold temperatures didn’t keep the eagles or gulls from flying. A lone eagle flew over the bay several times.

But the prettiest scene was a flock of herring gulls lifting off of the dock in front of Lighthouse Point which was covered in frost.
