Venus Jupiter and The Crescent Moon

In the last couple of weeks we had two lunar events that lit up the night sky. The first was when the crescent moon converged with the planets Venus and Jupiter. As these objects came together it gave night sky watchers a pretty impressive view.

Moon Rise Over Split Rock Lighthouse

The second was the moon rising above Split Rock Lighthouse Thursday night. Clouds covered the sky for most of the day. I didn’t think we would be able to see the moon but just as the sun started to set the clouds broke. I hiked down the shore just in time to see the moon casting its beam across the waters of Lake Superior. With the temperatures dropping to just below zero I seemed to be the only one that braved the elements to take in the view.

Just after taking this photo I saw the lights of an ore boat up bound for Two Harbors. Between the moon, the lighthouse and the lights on the thousand foot freighter I had to just sit there for several minutes taking in the magic of the evening.
