We couldn’t believe how incredibly beautiful the landscape was around us. It was late on Christmas Eve and our son Adam and I skied to an overlook high above Lake Superior. We already had a full evening. We attended Christmas Eve service, ate a wonderful supper, opened presents and spent time with family. This Christmas was especially nice because we got to see our future granddaughter. Rebecca is in the process of adopting a three month old little girl named Adeline.
Now it is late and we are moonlight skiing. We are surrounded by birch, the ghostly shadows of the trees zip by as we glide over the snow. Adam asked, “Was that a wolf?” The sound was from a distance so it was hard to tell. We decided to take a break and try howling to see if the wolves would respond. A pack of wolves have been hanging around the park and many skiers have seen their tracks. Karla and I saw one of the wolves earlier in the week.Skiing Gooseberry Falls State Park
We howled a few times but received no response. About a mile down the trail we come across tracks and signs where the wolves have left scent markings. They probably heard us howling but had chosen not to respond.
With all the beautiful snow received over the last two weeks thousands of skiers up and down the shore are having the same experiences. The skiing on the North Shore is excellent. I was out again today and it was so fun to see the families enjoying the new snow. Everyone had a smile on their face.Skiing Gooseberry Falls State Park
For those of you who enjoy cross country skiing or snowshoeing I recommend hitting the trails while the conditions are this good. I hope the attached photos will inspire you to get outdoors and have some fun. As Adam always says, “We need to exercise to take care of our most valuable asset, our health.”
