Skiing the Cascade 001
Every winter there is a short window of opportunity to ski the Cascade River. It usually happens sometime in March. The right amount of ice and snow along with a few warm days is needed to harden the surface of the snow to make it stable. There is a small group of adventurous individuals on the North Shore that look forward to this each year and for a few days last week it was a go. Butch Piepho, Bill Blank and I took the challenge to ski the Cascade River. During the two and one-half miles we skied, the river drops 500 feet and cascades over at least two dozen waterfalls. We started just off the Pike Lake Road and climbed out of the river before entering the gorge at Cascade River State Park.
